Thirtysomething

Thirtysomething

I'm in the middle of two projects right now, one that I'm working on for Apartment Therapy's Holiday DIY Gift Guide, the other a new iteration of the paper lantern project that involves collecting hundreds of leaves.  I hope to bring you at least one of those by next week.  In the meantime, here's what we were snacking on this week.  I followed my usual peanut butter cookie recipe, and added a couple of ingredients to the mix to give them a little something more, one being baking cocoa, the other cracked sea salt. The result is a soft at center, crispy at the edges cookie with a peanut butter cup flavor. Here are some glamour shots of cookie eating and the recipe.  Have a great weekend!

Party Snack

Party Snack

I'm still here! I've been buried under a pile of schoolwork, and random blog-related events, the latest being the Blurb Food Fair which I'll be sharing next week. I'm pretty beat, but I'm so ready to get back to Poppy Haus. Today's recipe is a is my go-to snack for feeding the masses over the holidays: stove top popcorn.  I love popcorn, because I can make it at a moments notice, and  when I do it somehow seems a little more special than a bag of chips- not to mention it's a lot better for you. There are so many ways to season popcorn beyond the old standby of butter and salt - here are my favorite fall versions using white or yellow corn kernels.

Picnic Soup

Picnic Soup

(Today's post is being dispatched from The South of France by Lisa Fontaine. Enjoy!)

I'm excited to be back at Poppy Haus today as a guest contributor, thanks Heather for having me!  Fall is always one of my favorite times of the year.  The kids are back in school, the tourists have fled the Bay Area- reducing commute times (only slightly), and the weather is warm and glorious for our Indian summer.  This year, things are a bit different, although equally enjoyable.  My husband and I decided to fulfill a lifelong dream and are spending the year abroad in France with our three young children Bijou (8) and twins Eero & Wilder (3).  We are living in the countryside in southwest France in a 200-year-old farmhouse and our children attend public school in our nearby village of only 800 inhabitants.  Needless to say, things are quite different than our urban life back home.

White Bean Chili Verde with Pumpkin

White Bean Chili Verde with Pumpkin

This recipe is one of those things that came together on a day when we might have been just too tired to cook, and could have very well ordered some take out to get us through. Instead we turned to our old friend the slow-cooker, because I had a hankering for chili verde. The addition of pumpkin makes it a hearty, autumn stew, and we ate ours up with sliced avocado, and honey cornbread.  Here's the recipe...

Kale Pesto Roasted Cauliflower

Kale Pesto Roasted Cauliflower

I've never really loved pesto.  I think I'm kind of sensitive to garlic, so it always tastes so strong to me.  Alas, I had to make pesto as part of my preschool duties this month, so I prepared a mild version using only baby kale and spinach, toasted pine nuts, olive oil and sea salt.  The result is really very delicious, almost creamy despite being vegan.  It would work for a spread on toasted bread, or as a sauce for gnocchi, but today's recipe has it coated onto cauliflower florets and roasted in the oven.  Roasting vegetables gives them a tender, nutty flavor, and adding pesto to the mix only bolsters that quality...
